What do high interest rates mean for companies?
Rising interest rates make your business debt more expensive, which means you'll have to use more cash to cover your interest costs.
Ultimately, rising interest rates make doing business more expensive across the board. Not only are your costs higher, but other businesses and individuals also feel the pinch, affecting the entire economy.
With profit margins that actually expand as rates climb, entities like banks, insurance companies, brokerage firms, and money managers generally benefit from higher interest rates. Central bank monetary policies and the Fed's reserver ratio requirements also impact banking sector performance.
Lower interest rates make big-ticket items cheaper for both businesses and consumers. Businesses take advantage of lower rates to invest in expansion.
The financial sector generally experiences increased profitability during periods of high-interest rates. This is primarily because banks and financial institutions earn more from the spread between the interest they pay on deposits and the interest they charge on loans.
When interest rates are rising, both businesses and consumers will cut back on spending. This will cause earnings to fall and stock prices to drop. On the other hand, when interest rates have fallen significantly, consumers and businesses will increase spending, causing stock prices to rise.
A decrease in interest rates by the Federal Reserve has the opposite effect of a rate hike. Investors and economists alike view lower interest rates as catalysts for growth—a benefit to personal and corporate borrowing. This, in turn, leads to greater profits and a robust economy.
Companies that find they have more money thanks to higher rates can raise dividends, invest more and be more willing to pay up for the right staff, all supporting the economy.
High interest rates, driven by the Federal Reserve's campaign of anti-inflation rate hikes are affecting companies that sell mortgages, chemicals, facelift machines, vacations, and pretty much anything else you can imagine.
Another way the interest rate environment affects stocks has to do with companies' bottom lines. If a debt-issuing company faces higher borrowing costs due to rising rates, it may result in reduced company profits, which can be reflected in lower stock prices.
Do high interest rates mean recession?
Interest rates usually fall during a recession. Historically, the economy typically grows until interest rates are hiked to cool down price inflation and the soaring cost of living. Often, this results in a recession and a return to low interest rates to stimulate growth.
As interest rates rise, the required rate of return by investors also generally increases, making it more expensive for businesses to raise capital. This impacts the value of future cash flows and, ultimately, the value of the business. It may also make it more expensive for a potential acquirer to buy the business.
Higher interest rates can't stop the impact of these kinds of things. But they can slow down new causes of inflation that follow on from these shocks. These new causes include things like businesses putting up their prices because they face higher costs themselves.
Tech Still Rules the Roost
Tech continues to dominate in 2024. As businesses expand digital capabilities, demand soars for everything from cybersecurity to cloud services and data analytics. 5G infrastructure is the backbone supporting much of this tech-fueled future, delivering internet speeds 10 times faster than 4G.
Central banks control short-term interest rates, which in turn impact all other interest rates. Central banks buy and sell securities, known as open market operations, to banks in order to affect their reserves, which determines how they charge interest.

There are signs cost pressures are limiting growth. The same survey of small businesses by Alignable that found companies felt burned by higher interest rates also showed constraints on hiring, with 58% of respondents saying they couldn't afford to hire the employees they need.
More late payments: When interest rates increase, businesses tend to be under more financial pressure and experience strained cash flow. This can result in them making payments later, affecting the payee business' cash flow in turn.
As noted above, the financial performance of life insurers generally improves with higher interest rates. As their existing bonds mature, they will be replaced by bonds with higher interest earnings.
How does raising interest rates help inflation? The Fed raises interest rates to slow the amount of money circulating through the economy and drive down aggregate demand. With higher interest rates, there will be lower demand for goods and services, and the prices for those goods and services should fall.
Why does the Fed keep raising interest rates?
The Fed has repeatedly raised rates in an effort to corral rampant inflation that has reached 40-year highs. Higher interest rates may help curb soaring prices, but they also increase the cost of borrowing for mortgages, personal loans and credit cards.
The Federal Reserve meets next on March 19 and 20, 2024.
To combat ongoing inflation, it raised the federal funds rate 11 times between March 2022 and July 2023. After its December 2023 session, the Fed forecasted it would make three quarter-point cuts by the end of 2024 to lower the benchmark rate to 4.6%.
Corporate profits have contributed to inflation, though experts differ on the extent. A recent report from Groundwork Collaborative, a progressive advocacy group, argues that corporate profits drove 53% of inflation during the second and third quarters of 2023 and 34% since the start of the pandemic.
So, growth stocks depend on cash flows in the distant future that are heavily discounted. They are, therefore, much more sensitive to rising interest rates. Higher interest rates have a greater impact on their valuations than the companies whose value comes from near-term cash flows.
Corporate profits drove 53% of inflation during the second and third quarters of 2023 and more than one-third since the start of the pandemic, the report found, analyzing Commerce Department data. That's a massive jump from the four decades prior to the pandemic, when profits drove just 11% of price growth.
