How do lower interest rates affect banks?
The Federal Reserve reduces interest rates in order to encourage businesses and consumers to borrow more money, adding fuel to the economy. The banks will benefit by the rising demand for loans. But the profit from each loan will be lower, as will the amount the bank makes by investing in short-term debt securities.
Rising rates are a risk for banks, even though many benefit by collecting higher interest rates from borrowers while keeping deposit rates low. Loan losses may also increase as both consumers and businesses now face higher borrowing costs—especially if they lose jobs or business revenues.
Low interest rates mean more spending money in consumers' pockets. That also means they may be willing to make larger purchases and will borrow more, which spurs demand for household goods. This is an added benefit to financial institutions because banks are able to lend more.
Many banks benefit from rising interest rates, helping to expand their net interest margins and profitability. This is because banks are typically able to reprice their loans to market interest rates, while the rates paid on deposits tend to lag.
Higher interest rates will likely result in a higher APY
APR (annual percentage rate) applies to interest accruing on a debt, while APY (annual percentage yield) includes compound interest paid to investors and borrowers. The higher the APYs go on your savings account, the more you'll end up making on your idle cash.

Interest-rate risk
During the COVID-19 recession and its aftermath, many banking customers chose to sit on their government stimulus checks instead of taking out loans. Banks themselves are profit-seeking institutions, so they were left with few options other than investing in Treasuries.
It prompts consumers to postpone purchases due to a view that things will soon cost less. Businesses respond to falling demand by cutting prices, which reduces their profits and investment. Unemployment climbs. As prices fall, real debt burdens climb.
When interest rates lower, unemployment rises as companies lay off expensive workers and hire contractors and temporary or part-time workers at lower prices. When wages decline, people can't pay for things and prices on goods and services are forced down, leading to more unemployment and lower wages.
Your investments can also benefit from lower interest rates. Since lower rates incentivize borrowing, businesses can make investments in equipment, real estate, and other expansions that can help increase stock prices. On the other hand, lower interest rates tend to reduce returns on bonds.
Do banks lose money when interest rates rise?
While rising interest rates give banks opportunities to increase earnings by pushing up rates charged on loans, they also could increase the cost of liabilities and decrease the value of investment securities held as assets.
Rate cuts typically stimulate the economy because companies are more willing to invest, which bodes well for the labor market. “Having lower interest rates means firms are able to hire employees and invest in projects,” Davies said.
In the scenario where a central bank unexpectedly decreases interest rates, generally, the currency weakens. This happens because the lower interest rates make that particular currency less attractive to foreign investors, leading to a decrease in demand for the currency.
No financial institutions currently offer 7% interest savings accounts. But some smaller banks and regional credit unions are currently paying more than 6.00% APY on savings accounts and up to 9.00% APY on checking accounts, though these accounts have restrictions and requirements.
Banks earn money in three ways: They make money from what they call the spread, or the difference between the interest rate they pay for deposits and the interest rate they receive on the loans they make. They earn interest on the securities they hold.
Commercial banks make money by providing and earning interest from loans such as mortgages, auto loans, business loans, and personal loans. Customer deposits provide banks with the capital to make these loans.

Are credit unions safer than banks?
Generally speaking, credit unions are safer than banks in a collapse. This is because credit unions use fewer risks, serving individuals and small businesses rather than large investors, like a bank.
Bank of America's Financial Health
In recent years, Bank of America's financial performance has been relatively stable. In 2022, the bank reported a net income of $20.4 billion, a decrease from the previous year's $27.4 billion. However, its revenue increased from $91.2 billion in 2021 to $95.2 billion in 2022.
As a general rule of thumb, when the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates, it causes the stock market to go up; when the Federal Reserve raises interest rates, it causes the stock market to go down. But there is no guarantee as to how the market will react to any given interest rate change.
Higher interest rates have gotten a bad rap, but over the long term, they may provide more income for savers and help investors allocate capital more efficiently. In a higher-rate environment, equity investors can seek opportunities in value-oriented and defensive sectors as well as international stocks.
When banks want extra deposits, they can raise the interest rate they offer on savings accounts to attract extra cash. If they want to decrease bank debits, they can lower interest rates.
