Can you fail a soft credit check?
A soft credit check is not a credit application, so there is no “pass” or “fail” outcome. Instead, it only provides an overview of your credit profile for informational purposes. However, a soft credit check can give you an idea of whether you will likely be approved for credit.
A soft credit pull can show information such as credit accounts, late payments, collection activity and hard credit inquiries. Only you can see what soft credit inquiries have been run on your credit report.
Soft pulls can be as accurate as a hard credit pull and provide much of the same information. However, they won't affect your credit score like a hard pull would. Can lenders see soft pulls? Lenders cannot see a soft pull on your credit report -- only you can.
A soft inquiry does not affect your credit score in any way. When a lender performs a soft inquiry on your credit file, the inquiry might appear on your credit report, but it won't impact your credit score.
A soft inquiry happens whenever you check your credit report, or when a lender checks your credit report without your knowledge or permission. Soft inquiries have no effect on your credit score. Lenders can't even see how many soft inquiries have been made on your credit report.
A soft credit check may be visible on your credit report, but won't affect your credit score, or your ability to get credit in future, so there's no need to worry about how often they're completed.
Lenders may want to do a soft credit check so they can pre-approve any offers, or show you what you could potentially be eligible for. A soft credit check doesn't leave a visible footprint on your credit file, but it is recorded. This means no other lenders can see it.
Soft credit checks are used to provide insurance or credit quotations, a mortgage agreement in principle, for credit card eligibility, and by price comparison websites. They can also be used by companies you already have a relationship with, helping them to complete background checks.
Hard and soft inquiries, sometimes referred to as credit checks, are requests to view your credit report by lenders, landlords, employers and companies that are authorized to do so. Both hard and soft inquiries will show up on your credit report. However, only one type of inquiry impacts your credit score.
The good news is an employer background credit check won't affect your credit or FICO score at all. Why? It's considered a soft inquiry, which pulls most of your financial information for data purposes as opposed to a hard inquiry, which can take points off your score.
How long does a soft credit check stay on your record?
Soft inquiries can stay on a credit report for up to two years, but they're not visible to anyone other than you. During that time they don't have any impact on your credit scores.
Each hard inquiry can cause your credit score to drop by a few points. There's no such thing as “too many” hard inquiries, but multiple credit inquiries within a short window of time can suggest that you might be a risky borrower.
Although inquiries can remain on your credit reports for up to two years, FICO algorithms ignore any inquiry over 12 months old. After 6 months, FICO algorithms give very little weight to inquiries. At best, you'd gain a point if the inquiry were deleted after 6 months. Before 6 months, maybe 2 or 3 points.
If you find an unauthorized or inaccurate hard inquiry, you can file a dispute letter and request that the bureau remove it from your report. The consumer credit bureaus must investigate dispute requests unless they determine your dispute is frivolous. Still, not all disputes are accepted after investigation.
The short answer is yes, but it depends on things like how many inquiries a credit bureau receives for you in a short period of time, and the type of inquiry.
Soft inquiries do not affect credit scores and are not visible to potential lenders that may review your credit reports. They are visible to you and will stay on your credit reports for 12 to 24 months, depending on the type. The other type of inquiry is a “hard” inquiry.
Soft credit inquiries have no impact on your credit score. If a lender checks your credit report, soft credit inquiries won't show up at all. Soft inquiries are only visible on consumer disclosures—credit reports that you request personally.
But that doesn't mean your permission is always needed before a credit check — if someone is performing a hard credit check, they have to ask for permission, but if someone is performing a soft credit check, they don't have to ask for permission.
Well, there are several credit score ranges. For instance, 780–850 may be considered "excellent" while 720–780 may be seen as "good." But when it comes to a range that may be seen as bad, a score between 300 (the lowest) and 660 fits into the “poor” category.
Since hard inquiries affect your credit score and what is found may even affect approval, you might be wondering: How many inquiries is too many? The answer differs from lender to lender, but most consider six total inquiries on a report at one time to be too many to gain approval for an additional credit card or loan.
What companies do soft credit checks?
Credit Card Company | Online Pre-Approval Check? | Soft Pull? |
---|---|---|
Capital One | Yes | Yes |
Chase | Yes | Yes |
Citibank | Yes | Yes |
Discover | Yes | Yes |
You could fail a phone credit check due to a low credit score, missed payments, too many credit applications, limited credit history, recent bankruptcy, too many credit applications, high debt-to-income ratio, fraudulent activity, or provider policies.
In the majority of states, employers can deny you employment if you have bad credit. Some states and cities have passed laws that prohibit the practice, though there are some exceptions, such as for jobs in the financial sector.
- Be Honest and Transparent. A letter explaining bad credit should be honest and transparent. ...

- Showcase Your Skills and Qualifications for the Job.
Soft inquiries do not affect your credit score. When a lender requests your report to do a deep dive into the contents – a hard credit pull – each inquiry has the possibility of decreasing your credit score by zero to five points. Note that's each time you apply.
