Mercedes-Benz Cars sold 2,043,800 units in 2023 as demand for superior products resulted in a rise of Mercedes-Maybach (+19%), G-Class (+11%) and Mercedes-AMG (+4%) to 328,200 Top-End Vehicles last year. An additional 60,000 V-class and EQV models were sold in 2023. The Renault 5 is back and reimagined! As someone who owned a pastel orange Renault 5 in their younger days, when first launched, I'm excited to see the return of this classic car. What's even more interesting is the merger speculation that could lead to France consolidating its grip on small car production and potentially spawning a swarm of low-cost miniature EVs. Stellantis (French government owns some 5%), is already on the way with the cute Renault 5, Fiat 500, and Fiat 600. 💥 Stellantis is ready for some M&A action...➡️ When doubt is raising over EVs, it’s obviously a moment Carlos Tavares is cherishing as an opportunity for him to make his concerns heard. That’s what he did to multiple medias last Wednesday.💡 In a nutshell: 100% BEV sales regulations + profitability impact of the UAW strike (for the US) in the light of the growing Chinese competition selling BEVs at ICE price = Darwin is back for Western carmakers.😰 On M&As: Chinese competition while Western governments “are imposing 100% BEV sales” are gonna lead to an “existential problem” for Western carmakers. For Tavares, scale is gonna be more than crucial. The opportunity for Tavares to throw a friendly dig to Renault’s scale and strategy over Ampere. “It’s refreshing” but his “thinking is exactly the opposite” of what Renault is doing, adding that Renault is not a target for an M&A due to the French state involvement.🤝🏼 So yes, Stellantis is open for consolidation in an “amicable” way, looking for a win-win operation just like he did with the PSA-FCA merger (for which he thanked the EU by the way, it has to be highlighted!). These numbers are not a surprise, we have not sold a Mercedes this year.In fact, in 2023, we have only delivered cars that were ordered prior to the Agency cut off date. We will not get this data, but it would be interesting to track order take from Jan 1 23 to see how the new process is working, I know from our perspective, and many other vehicle leasing brokers I know, we are switch selling to Audi & BMW (and others brands).Now, whilst we are on, let's have look at Audi & BMW....Audi seem to have been aggressive this year having a push on A3, A4, A6 and Q5 funded via Audi Finance (VWFS), I suspect these models make a large proportion of the noted sales. I also suspect a lot of these, whilst funded via Audi Finance, will have been arranged by brokers, probably working their Mercedes renewals. No supported deals to the FN50 leasing companies.BMW, well they have stopped PCH via one channel, so limiting their market and reduced discounts across the board, however they have maintained contact with FN50, keeping the engagement of the broker market.Who has the right model? This article is absolutely spot on. Sadly, my thoughts align with those of Carlos. We are in a bad place as the onslaught is already in motion. If we don't make rapid advancements the determination, the price advantage and the quality product that Chineses EV manufacturers offer, will mean that Western OEM's will see the demise of many nameplates in fairly short order. #china #ev #Europe #marketshare #demise
